The Colorado First Judicial District Critical Response Team is a multi-jurisdictional team of investigators under the authority of the District Attorney that investigates and reviews cases of deadly force used by a peace officer.
Since 1990, incidents involving the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer in Gilpin or Jefferson County have been investigated by the First Judicial District Critical Response Team (CIRT). Upon completion, the investigation is presented to the District Attorney who conducts a thorough review of all the evidence before determining if charges should be filed against the officer involved.
Under state law, all Colorado law enforcement agencies and District Attorney’s offices are required to develop and make public a protocol for participating in a multi-agency team responsible for investigating and reviewing critical incidents in their jurisdiction.
